Chapter 9 - The Family They Chose

One year later, Lauren stood on the terrace of their new home outside Boston.
It was not a mansion.
It had no marble staircase, no private elevator, and no room designed to impress strangers.
It had a garden.
A messy kitchen.
A nursery filled with toys.
And a front porch where Luca liked to sit with Giovanni every morning, pointing at birds and demanding to know their names.
Giovanni had changed.
Not completely.
Men like him did not erase themselves overnight.
He was still intense. Still watchful. Still capable of making a room fall silent with one look.
But now he came home for dinner.
Now he put his phone away when Luca reached for him.
Now he told Lauren where he was going, why he was going, and when he would return.
And every time he walked through the front door, Luca ran to him shouting, “Papa!”
That was the sound that healed something in all of them.
On a warm spring evening, Giovanni found Lauren in the garden.
Luca was chasing bubbles across the grass.
Giovanni stood beside her, hands in his pockets.
“You know,” he said, “I once believed fear was the only thing that kept people loyal.”
Lauren glanced at him. “And now?”
“Now I know love is harder. But it’s better.”
He reached into his jacket pocket.
Lauren laughed softly. “Giovanni…”
“I know,” he said. “No grand speeches.”
He knelt anyway.
The ring was simple. Elegant. Nothing like the diamonds he once used to buy apologies.
“Lauren Grant,” he said, “you gave me a son. But more than that, you gave me a chance to become someone worthy of him.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I don’t want to own you,” he continued. “I don’t want to cage you. I want to build a life with you—one where you can always speak, always leave, and always know you are loved.”
Luca ran toward them, bubbles floating around him.
“Mommy!” he shouted. “Papa!”
Lauren looked at Giovanni.
Then at their son.
“Yes,” she said.
Giovanni stood and pulled her close.
Luca wrapped his tiny arms around both of their legs.

And for the first time since Lauren had fled New York with two suitcases and a secret beneath her heart, she did not feel like she was running.
She was home.
